Truck and Trailer Equipment – Attaching a Semi Trailer to a Road Tractor

A common question asked by people outside of the trucking industry is: “How is a road tractor connected to a semi-trailer?” The attachment between these two pieces of transportation equipment is made by two connecting devices. One is the “fifth wheel” that is mounted on the rear frame of the road tractor. The other is called the “kingpin”, which is located on the front end of the truck trailer. Here is a brief explanation.

What is a Fifth-Wheel?

Originally, a fifth wheel was a steering mechanism resembling a wheel that enabled the front axle of a horse-drawn wagon to rotate when making turns. Around 1910, John C. Endebrock invented a device for coupling trailers to motor vehicles. In its initial use, trailers were towed by Ford Model “T” passenger cars. This coupling scheme required three men to hook to and unhook the trailer from the automobile. In 1918, Endebrock designed a new coupling devise that allowed a single driver to easily connect the tractor and the trailer. The new fifth wheel design used a jaw with a spring locking device mounted on the fifth wheel plate that was attached to the tractor frame.

Today, the fifth wheel serves as a coupling device that attaches a road tractor to a semi-trailer. A fifth wheel is a heavy metal disc with a “V” shaped slot. It is attached horizontally to the chassis above the rear axles of the road tractor. The “V” slot is located at the rear and it contains a locking device. The fifth wheel mechanism used to connect tractors and trailers today is very similar to Endebrock’s design from the early twentieth century.

What is a Kingpin?

A kingpin is a heavy metal cylindrical pin that is located underneath the front end of the trailer. The kingpin is the mechanism on the trailer that locks it to a road tractor. It is typically positioned between 18″ to 48″ from the trailer nose. A greased metal grid plate surrounds the kingpin. This grid plate allows the fifth wheel to slide underneath the trailer. When the tractor is backed into the nose of a trailer, the fifth wheel pivots and slides underneath the trailer’s grid plate. The fifth wheel then locks onto the trailer’s king pin.

When coupled to the kingpin, the fifth wheel enables the semi trailer to rotate at the point where the fifth wheel and kingpin are joined. The rotating attachment allows the tractor-trailer combination to make turns and provides stability and maneuverability on the road. When the load is delivered, the driver disconnects the tractor from the trailer by rolling down the trailer’s dolly legs. He then pulls a lever to disengage the fifth wheel locking mechanism and drives the tractor away from the trailer.

Semi-Trailers Or Truck Trailer – An Overview

A semi-trailer (also known as truck trailer) is a type of over-the-road freight vehicle that does not have a front axle. Semi-trailers are pulled by truck-tractors. A large proportion of a semi-trailer’s weight is supported by the road tractor or by a detachable front axle assembly called a dolly. A semi-trailer is equipped with legs, called dolly legs, that can be lowered to support it when it is unhooked from the tractor. When coupled together, the tractor and trailer combination is often referred to as a semi, 18-wheeler, big-rig, articulated lorry, or truck and trailer.The purpose of a semi-trailer is to carry freight. The majority of products are transported in semi-trailers. Truck trailers are sold by manufacturer owned and independent dealerships.

Common Types of Trailers

Types include dry freight vans, refrigerated vans (reefers), flatbeds (straight platform, step-deck, lowboy, double drop, etc.) and tanks. Sizes vary, but the most common sizes in use today are 53′ or 48′ in length; 102″ or 96″ in width; and, up to 13’6″ in height. Typically, trailers carry 45,000 lbs. of freight.

A flatbed is non-enclosed with no sides, no roof and no doors. Flatbed trailers can be loaded or unloaded from the sides, and they do not require an elevated forklift for load entry or removal. Flatbeds are also referred to as Platform or Deck trailers. Varieties include standard straight floor flatbeds, drop decks, lowboys and other specialized flatbeds.

A dry van is a fully enclosed vehicle. It is the most common type. Standard varieties include Sheet & Post Construction and Plate Construction. Dry vans are also known as dry boxes.

Vans used for hauling products requiring temperature controls are known as Refrigerated Vans or Reefers. Reefers are insulated in the nose, sides, roof and floor. A refrigeration unit is mounted on the nose. Reefers are capable of maintaining below zero temperatures.

Trailer Towing, Setting it Up For Safe Handling

You finally decided to rent or purchase a travel trailer. There are two types. Fifth wheel with the hitch set up in the box of the pickup truck and the bunk style that fits onto the hitch below your bumper. Here we will set up the bunk style.

A properly set up truck and bunk trailer will keep you and your family safe and secure and your trailer will tow well and your tires will last for the maximum.

So many times we have seen trailers set up wrong. The trailer is either too high in the front or back. This will get your front or rear tires to wear out quicker and can also lead to overheating on the load bearing tire.
I will assume that you have had a tow package installed in your vehicle. That will keep your engine and transmission from over heating.
We will assume you have a hitch ready to install.
We will assume that you have had a good quality electrical socket all set up.
You have a trailer hitch installed on your vehicle. The heavier the better.

The first thing you must do is back up your tow vehicle and with someone guiding you, stop just short of the trailer hitch. Park and shut off the engine. Get into the habit of shutting the truck off like this every time you wan to work between the trailer and truck. Accidents will happen. Now place a block under the trailer jack, jack up the trailer until the trailer hitch is above the ball on the truck hitch. Lift up the bail on the hitch. With your helper watching from the side and not behind the trailer, very slowly back up until the trailer hitch is exactly above the ball. Stop. Shut off the engine. Lower the hitch onto the ball until you are able to push down and lock the bail. Now jack up the trailer and the truck together about six or eight inches more. Install the sway bars and hook them up with the lever without too much strain on the bars. Hook on the chains remembering how many links you have on each side. Lower the whole unit down and bring the jack up as high as it will go. Hook up the safety chains. Connect the electrical socket and turn on the engine and check your lights. You are done for now.

Now take your unit to a paved parking lot where you can park level. Undo the trailer reversing your last procedure. Use a tape measure and write down the distance of your front and back bumper of the truck to the ground. Hook up the trailer as before and after you have the sway bars hooked up and the unit lowered down again, check the distances from the truck bumpers once again. Repeat the last steps over again until your truck bumpers are the same distance before the load went on. Hook up the safety chains, raise the jacks, and make note of how many links were used on the sway bars. From now on every time you set up the trailer the number of links will be your guide.

Tank Chassis

Tank container chassis, also referred to as tank chassis, drop frame chassis or tank trailers, are a form of intermodal transportation for portable bulk liquid containers or ISO tank containers. They are characteristically longer and have lower deck height ideal for transporting constantly shifting payloads. The invention of the tank container revolutionized the way bulk liquids were transported, stored, and handled worldwide. It has improved safety, reduced costs and brought with it the benefits of convenience and efficiency associated with a multi-modal transport system. Invariably the invention of the drop frame chassis followed soon after to accommodate this new type of intermodal container.

Though in the USA tank containers are typically the same dimensions (20′ x 8′ x 8.5′. as a standard ISO ocean container, tank chassis are much longer than the typical 20′ container chassis. Tank chassis typically measure 40′-43′ in length by 8′ wide x 4′ tall. This chassis has a standard drop-frame design providing a lower center of gravity than conventional trailers and an overall length suitable to legally scale most tanks. Twistlocks provide a secure mounting mechanism for the tanks and eliminate the need for straps or chains. The lower center of gravity is crucial for reducing the chances of a roll over with the constant shifting weight of the liquid cargo. These chassis can also be fitted with additional accessories including: lift kits to facilitate product discharge, hose tubes, and hi/lo kits to carry two empty tanks.

Tank chassis types

The tank chassis has evolved over the past years to accommodate greater payload weights. The tank chassis comes in tandem axle, spread axle, tri-axle, and hi/lo combo configurations. Tandem Axle Chassis were the industry standard initially. The closed tandem drop deck chassis typically have a GVWR of 65,000 lbs. The quest to increase payload capacities spawned the tri-axle chassis with the ability to scale 42,000 lbs. on the trailer axles. The addition of the third axle however added a significant increase to the tare weight of the chassis, thus limiting the permissible weight limits to comply with bridge laws. This led to the invention of the Spread Axle Chassis with a spread of 109″ allowing for the same weight to be dispersed on the rear axles of the trailer (42,000 lbs.)as the tri-axle. This is the new industry standard with a GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of 80,000 lbs.
